BELLE HOLLOW FARMS AND EXOTICS
COMPLIMENTS OF ELIZABETH WHITLOCK: BELLEHOLLOW
FARMS & EXOTICS:
Kitten season has begun and the phone
is ringing off the hook. Several of the recent calls have, however, given me some concerns. Of course there are the usual
people who want cats even though savannahs are illegal where they live. The ever challenging “I’m looking for
a BIG cat” etc. But of more concern are 2 recent calls from people who are being misled by some of the breeders out
First was the call from the nice lady who is violently allergic to cats. She says several breeders have told
her that Savannahs are Hypo Allergenic. This raises my “dander” as it wrecks of Simon Brodie and the original
Savannah cat scam selling cats to people who think that some how they can have a cat and not their cat allergy.
was the call from a very nice man who said he wanted an early generation savannah. He had been reading the Yahoo groups
and was certain this was the perfect pet for his family. Several breeders had assured him that F-1 and F-2 cats are “Dog
Like” and could fit in to any home. Now it turns out this very nice man with a wife and 3 children has never had
a dog or a cat. His children have never had a furry pet and he really had no real clue about the reality of owning and being
owned by an F-1 Savannah. Don’t get me wrong I love the cats I produce and the ones that share our life, but realistically
Early Generation Savannah cats are not for everyone.
I am the most ardent supporter of the right to own any pet you
can responsibly care for, wild or domestic, BUT, I also firmly believe that breeders and seller of these animals need a
dose of ethics and must represent what they are selling with honesty. Not every pet is right for every owner. Certainly
a high-energy cat like an early generation Savannah is not the perfect pet for a family that has no animal experience. I
guess if he got lucky it might work out but just because he can afford an early generation cat does not mean that breeders
should not be honest about the effort necessary to care for one of these beautiful but mischievous animals. Breeders need
to remember that not everyone is willing or able to devote so much of their lives, time and resources to a sometimes, troublesome
Like all breeders I have placed cats in homes that did not work out. Families break up, people get sick, move
and a million other things can change and make the home no longer the perfect place for an early generation cat. I try very
hard to look ahead into the future of the homes I place cats in to determine if the cat will actually have a forever home.
No one can say for sure, but the blatant misrepresentation of the true nature of a pet to an unsuspecting buyer is just
Breeder, PLEASE, consider the homes you are encouraging to purchase your kittens. I know sometimes you,
like I, worry that the perfect home may not present itself. But don’t let dollars blind you to the nature of the home
you are placing your beloved kittens into. Worse still don’t misrepresent what your savannah is or is not. Breeders
get enough bad press without selling very expensive cats to people who have no idea what they are getting into.
